Witchcraft for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know, according to AI

This blog entry is not about “Witchcraft for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know”. Although that 345-word article is below, I didn’t write it. I used an artificial intelligence (AI) content writing tool, and that’s what this article is about.

I’ve read (and heard gossip) about writers and other content creators using AI to write books, blogs, social media posts, and even some of those Amazon Best Sellers by mysterious authors that can’t be found. AI content writing tools can be valuable but also have some significant problems.

The advantages of AI content writing tools

There are many different kinds of AI writing tools, from the simple Grammarly, which reviews spelling, grammar, clarity, and engagement, to advanced programs that can research and write an article in minutes. Writers and content creators can also use AI to write emails, headlines, captions, ads, testimonials, etc. Compared to the human writer, AI can produce more content quickly to meet the demands of a hungry market and is more cost-effective.

The problems with AI content writing tools

There are so many problems with AI content writing tools. In general, the results suck.

Google’s John Mueller once called AI-generated content “spam”. Mueller tweeted, “As far as I can tell, most sites have trouble creating higher-quality content, they don’t need help creating low-quality content.”

AI-generated content is generic, lacking originality, creativity, and the author’s voice. Plagiarism is also a problem. Many AI tools scrape the internet and stitch or combine content from different websites. AI writes for an algorithm, not quality.

Ironically, writing for an algorithm can backfire when it comes to Google. It’s reasonable to be sceptical of Google and its search engine results. However, in Google’s August 2022 helpful content update, the company reiterated that it aims “to ensure people see more original, helpful content written by people, for people, in search results.”

Google has a guide for search engine optimisation (SEO) but adds that content creators should apply SEO guidelines to people-first content. AI-generated content lacks Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness (E-A-T), an SEO concept derived from Google’s Quality Raters’ Guidelines. In its Webmaster guidelines, Google says it may take action on such content and prevent a website using automatically generated content from showing up in Search.

The use of AI content writing tools can hurt our communities

All the technical reasons aside, one big problem with AI content writing tools is their use can hurt our communities. AI writing tools are behind much of the plagiarism that Pagan authors face, and many of those generic and superficial articles, books, and other content are typically aimed at beginners.

Below is an example. An AI content writing tool wrote this in about five minutes, and I made minor edits.

AI should be an assistant

An AI writing tool can be helpful for writers and content creators. It can help spark ideas, source content suggestions, and overcome writer’s block. It can help you with grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, tone, and engagement. An AI writer can assist you but should never replace you. It can’t capture your voice, knowledge, experience, and wisdom.
