‘I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness’

My book review of Irene Solà’s I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness (translated by Mara Faye Lethem) is now live at The Wild Hunt—one of the longest-running online publications in the Pagan world, covering news, culture and commentary.

I picked up this short novel knowing only that it was about women and the dead, with elements of magical realism. That was enough. I’m always seeking out female writers and voices from beyond the Anglosphere, and Solà—a Catalan writer—delivered something unexpected. Set in an ancestral farmhouse in the Catalan mountains, the novel draws deeply from local folklore. It’s graphic, non-linear and challenging, but also inventive and genuinely haunting.
