The Eureka Skydeck

The first thing a first-time visitor to Melbourne should do is go to the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower and get a bird’s eye view of the city from the Eureka Skydeck.

The Eureka Tower is a 297.3-metre (975 ft) skyscraper located in the Southbank precinct of Melbourne. The observation deck, the Eureka Skydeck, occupies the entire 88th floor. It is the highest public vantage point in a building in the Southern Hemisphere. The Eureka Skydeck offers spectacular 360 degree, floor-to-ceiling views of the city all the way down to Port Phillip Bay. On a clear day, you can see to the Dandenong Ranges. Visit at night to see Melbourne lit up.

There’s also an observation deck. The Edge is a glass cube which projects three metres out from the building – with you in it – suspended almost 300 metres above the ground. They like to make it sound scary, but I think you can handle it.

The nice thing about the Skydeck is that there’s no rush. The Edge is the only timed experience. Otherwise, you can linger up there for a while and enjoy a coffee or ice cream from the snack bar.
